The Worsley family acquired the Manor of Hovingham in 1563. Originally from Lancashire, they claimed descent from Elias- a legendary giant who died fighting in the Crusades. They built a number of houses on the estate, all smaller than the one the family lives in now.
Hovingham Hall was designed and built by Thomas Worsley in the eighteenth century. His twin passions—horses and architecture—profoundly shaped the character of the house. Known within the family as “Thomas the Builder,” he left a lasting mark through his singular vision: the main entrance leads directly through a riding school.
