Houghton Hall was built from 1722 for the first English Prime Minister, Sir Robert Walpole. The original plans were by Colen Campbell, and James Gibbs altered them to include the magnificent baroque domes at each corner of the main block. William Kent created the palatial interiors, including the series of extraordinary ceilings. He treated the interiors as integrated schemes - a new idea at the time.
