Gezicht op de Achterzijde van Paleis het Loo, 1690-1694, Romeyn de Hooghe, PR-2046-06, Koninklijke Verzamelingen, Den Haag.
Stadtholder William III (1650-1702) purchased the medieval castle Het Oude Loo near Apeldoorn in 1684, with the intention of building a new hunting lodge next to it. A square main building in the classical style, flanked by wings on either side was built. The main building and wings were connected by semicircular colonnades. The interior design was largely done by Daniël Marot.
In the recently renovated 17th century Paleis Het Loo one wing has been restored back to the William and Mary years and the other wing shows more recent (late nineteenth/early twentieth century) rooms.
